One of my favourite ways to enjoy Edinburgh is simply to walk – whether through the cobbled lanes of the Old Town or along the peaceful Water of Leith. And what makes a city stroll even better? A delicious bite in hand. Here are my top picks for on-the-go eats in Edinburgh – perfect for grabbing something quick, gluten-free, or just plain tasty while soaking up the city’s charm.
🌯 Tupiniquim – Near the Meadows
This tiny green hut near The Meadows is an Edinburgh icon – and a saviour for anyone looking for gluten-free options that don’t compromise on flavour. Tupiniquim serves up Brazilian-style crepes, both sweet and savoury, made with tapioca flour. I love grabbing one and heading for a peaceful spot in the Old Town, or strolling through the Meadows on a sunny day. It’s a wholesome bite that always hits the spot.
🍦 Mary’s Milk Bar – Grassmarket
A scoop from Mary’s Milk Bar is practically a rite of passage in Edinburgh. I always go for the vegan gelato options – they’re creamy, creative, and never disappoint. The flavours change daily, so I always check her Instagram to see what’s on. It's the perfect sweet treat for wandering around the Grassmarket or heading up to the Castle for a panoramic view.
🍟 Frites – Lothian Road & Leith Walk
There’s nothing quite like hot, crispy fries on a chilly day, and Frites does them best. Belgian-style, golden, and with a ridiculous number of sauces to choose from, it’s my go-to comfort snack when the temperature drops. Whether I’m in town or out in Leith, it's a satisfying stop that warms you up from the inside out.
🥙 Planet Kuku – Leith Saturday Market
Every Saturday at the Leith Market, I make a beeline for Planet Kuku. Their Persian-inspired frittata-style dishes are hearty, wholesome, and absolutely packed with flavour. My favourite? The green pea kuku – bright, savoury, and perfectly complemented by one of their fresh side salads. It’s ideal to grab and enjoy along the nearby Shore.
🥪 Relish Deli – The Shore, Leith
When I find myself down by The Shore, I always stop by Relish for a takeaway sandwich. It’s the perfect grab-and-go lunch to enjoy by the Water of Leith, where you can watch the world go by in the sun. They’ve also got a lovely little selection of cakes and coffee if you fancy a proper sit-down moment. It’s laid-back and always satisfying.
🍵 Blank Street – Princes Street & Victoria Street
For a quick caffeine fix or a matcha moment, I love stopping by Blank Street. Their Daydream Matcha is a favourite of mine – smooth, creamy, and just the right kind of energising. Whether I’m shopping on Princes Street or exploring Victoria Street’s colourful charm, it’s a perfect pick-me-up in the middle of a busy day.
Final Thoughts
Edinburgh has so many little gems perfect for on-the-go eating, and these are the ones I return to again and again. Whether you’re wandering through historic streets, lounging in the Meadows, or watching boats bob along the Shore, these quick bites make city exploring even more delicious.
Have a favourite grab-and-go spot in Edinburgh? I’d love to hear about it! xx Tasha
