My Top Places to Eat in Edinburgh – Tried, True & To-Do

Updated: May 23

Above: The Outsider

Edinburgh isn’t just a feast for the eyes – it’s a feast for the senses, especially if you know where to eat. From hidden gardens in the heart of the Old Town to sleek rooftops and candlelit waterfront spots, this city continues to surprise and delight. Here’s a round-up of my favourite places to eat in Edinburgh, plus a few must-try restaurants still on my radar. 🪟 The Outsider – Old Town

With floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Edinburgh Castle, The Outsider is a true hidden gem tucked along George IV Bridge. It offers a stylish but relaxed setting with a menu that’s modern, unfussy, and full of flavour. The dishes are beautifully presented, the vibe is effortlessly cool, and the views make it perfect for both casual lunches and romantic dinners. It's one of those places that makes you fall in love with the city all over again.

🌮 Paloma Tacos and Cocktails – Leith

Tacos, tequila, and Leith vibes – what more could you want? Paloma Tacos and Cocktails brings bold Mexican flavours to this ever-cool neighbourhood. The fish tacos are a standout, and their margaritas are dangerously good. Great for a fun night out, especially if you grab a seat outside on a sunny day.

🐟 The Old Chain Pier – Newhaven

This seaside pub is a local treasure. The Old Chain Pier offers classic fish & chips with unbeatable views over the Firth of Forth. After dinner, take a slow sunset walk along the water – it’s pure Edinburgh waterfront magic. P.S. Live music every Friday and Saturday night!

🍸 The Black Grape – Royal Mile

Modern, moody, and full of flavour, The Black Grape delivers small plates made with a seasonal Scottish larder, perfectly paired with a creative cocktail list. Right on the Royal Mile, it’s one of those spots that balances trendy and timeless just right.

🍕 Origano – Leith Walk

This is where I go when I’m dreaming of Italian pizza done right. Origano has a charming, rustic interior and a pizza menu that nails both the classics and creative twists. It’s comfort food at its best – and it truly feels like a slice of Italy in Edinburgh.

🏰 Contini Cannonball – Castlehill

Romance, history, and views – Contini Cannonball delivers it all. With sweeping views of Edinburgh Castle, this restaurant is ideal for a special dinner. Expect Scottish-Italian dishes in an intimate, refined setting, perfect for slow evenings and meaningful moments.

🌇 SUSHISAMBA – W Hotel, St. James Quarter

Perched atop the W Hotel, SUSHISAMBA is an immersive dining experience. The vibrant fusion menu (Japanese, Brazilian, Peruvian) is full of bold surprises, but it’s the skyline views that really steal the show. Try to time your visit for sunset – it's unforgettable.

🌿 The Witchery by the Castle – Secret Garden

For pure Edinburgh drama and indulgence, The Witchery’s Secret Garden is hard to top. Hidden in Boswell's Court just steps from the Castle, this is luxury dining steeped in history. Think rich interiors, candlelight, and one of the most romantic courtyards in the city. A must for date nights or special occasions.

🚢 The Lighthouse Restaurant – Fingal Hotel, Leith

Dining aboard a luxurious ship? Yes, please. The Lighthouse Restaurant at Fingal Hotel is a beautifully restored former lighthouse tender moored in Leith. Expect impeccable service, refined dishes, and a serene maritime atmosphere that feels like an escape – without leaving the city.

On My Edinburgh Dining Wish List

These spots are top of my to-try list – I’ve heard glowing things and can’t wait to check them out:

🥂 Tipo – New Town

A sleek, stylish spot that’s been creating serious buzz. Tipo blends elegant small plates with a focus on high-quality ingredients and Mediterranean flair. The interior is minimal but warm – and everyone raves about their handmade pasta.

🔥 Timberyard – Old Town

Often described as one of Edinburgh’s best restaurants, Timberyard champions Scandinavian-style simplicity, open-fire cooking, and a hyper-seasonal approach. It’s tucked into a converted warehouse and has a rustic, intimate feel. A proper culinary experience.

🐑 The Little Chartroom – Leith

Refined yet down-to-earth, The Little Chartroom is all about elegant, locally sourced food with big flavours. The menu changes regularly and is often cited in foodie circles as one of the top spots in Edinburgh. Definitely booking soon.

🥘 Stockbridge Eating House – Stockbridge

Set in one of Edinburgh’s most charming neighbourhoods, Stockbridge Eating House is a cosy bistro-style restaurant that blends British and European influences. I’ve heard their brunch is fantastic, and it’s high on my list for a relaxed weekend visit.

Final Thoughts

Edinburgh’s food scene is ever-evolving – with cosy neighbourhood gems, fine-dining hotspots, and exciting new openings around every corner. Whether you’re a local looking for inspiration or a visitor seeking the best bites in town, I hope this list helps you fall in love with eating in Edinburgh – just like I have.

Hungry yet? Happy eating! xx Tasha
